THE MASTHEAD PLANE

The Piaggio P.36-L1 was one of the more successful Italian light planes produced after World War Two.  First flown in August 1948, the plane proved to be economical and versatile, serving both the Italian military and civil aviation needs through 1957, including twenty planes serving in the USA as Royal Gulls.

The forty-four foot wing and twin Lycoming six-cylinder engines gave the plane a cruise speed of 170 m.p.h. for a range of 715 miles carrying a pilot and four passengers.

This one is not for the faint of heart!  Building difficulties include a gull wing with two pusher engines and a boat hull with retractable (waterproof!) landing gear.  At least it’s not twin jets!

Frank Hansen won the door prize, and new member Eric Henriksen won the raffle prize.  Many thanks to Nankin Hardware & Hobby for providing the $15 gift certificate door prize.  When you shop at Nankin, please identify yourself as a DAM member, and thank them for their support!

FIELD REPORT

We expect to get one more cutting of the field for the season.  Field Marshall and mole-killing ace Bobby Harmon reports that his tally for the year so far is 66.  Better be careful, Bobby.  Even the Red Baron only got eighty!

THIRD PARTY BILLING

There was some discussion about accounting practices at the October meeting.  Please note that it is club policy for all bill payments to be made by the treasurer.  When you pay for something, you assume the club will pick up the tab.  There is no guarantee that it will!

ANNUAL SWAP

Swapmeister Charlie Thomas reports that our annual swap will be January 13th at the Monaghan Knights of Columbus hall.  Our costs have gone up an extra $50 for renting the hall, and $66 for the ads in Model Aviation.

NEWS FROM RIDER’S

While there was some initial difference of opinion at Rider’s following the ownership change, it has now been decided to continue to carry a full line of ElectroDynamics products.  Thanks, Rider’s!

Rider’s will hold its annual Halloween Midnite Madness Sale on Friday, October 25th.  Prices on non-discounted items will be cut 20%, and prices on discounted items will be cut 10%.  You might also want to check out the new B-25 ARF while you’re there!

Rider’s is looking to hire a salesperson who is knowledgeable in the area of brushless electric power systems for planes and helicopters.  The employee discount alone makes it worth while working there!

ONGOING EXPENSES

The club authorized payment of the fees associated with having a website for the next two years, as well as insurance riders required by the AMA for our meeting hall and our indoor flying site.

ONE OF OUR OWN

Set your recording devices for 10:30 p.m. on October 26th.  The television program “Michigan Voices of War” will include an interview with Alexander Jefferson, Tuskegee Airman and DAM member.

HELICOPTER FUN FLY

Further information from the Mid-America R/C Helicopter Fun Fly organizers indicate the have not considered the required licensing for food preparation and sales, or the costs associated with tent, table and chair rental.  President Arden McConnell reiterated that the DAM is only responsible for providing the flying site, and has offered no financial support for this fun fly.

SHOW AND TELL

Mike Cuba brought in his latest acquisition, a Parkzone Cessna 210 Centurion RTF.  This indoor flyer weighs a whopping 18 grams (2/3rds of an ounce) has 2.4 gigaHertz three-channel proportional control, and is powered by a 1S 70 mAh LiPo battery.  The included display stand contains the charger for the battery.  Mike was able to fly it in the meeting hall, doing horizonal figure eights as well as bouncing it off the walls and ceiling for no damage.  Rider’s carries it for $150.  Mike plans to fly it until the inevitable occurs, then use the electronics in a Guillows SE-5A.

ANNUAL BANQUET

Tim Kirsten has organized our annual banquet.  It will be January 29th at the Fortune Buffet on Middlebelt at Five Mile.  Unless we get a group discount, it will cost about $12 each.
